A most common misconception and confusion about solar photovoltaic and solar panels is that they are two different technologies that work differently from each other. The truth is apart from the name there us actually no difference between the two. In a solar PV system Photovoltaic cells are formed into solar arrays and lined up to make a solar module that is commonly called solar panels.

In the past, and before the evolution and adaptation of its technology, photovoltaic cells were really not designed to be a major source of clean and renewable energy. Probably the first electronic gadgets that you've seen them in are your calculators and children's toys that required only a little amount electricity. The applications dated back in the late 50's but soon enough, photovoltaic usage was adapted in space missions and research and some of the most complex and sophisticated satellites were powered by solar energy.

As the decades have passed and we have move forward and evolved, we have created a new challenge; with the spurt of global economy's, particularly western countries, industrial& manufacturing sectors have soared and along with it the emissions of greenhouse gases have exploded! That is a very big problem which has been calling for a solution – fast!

This means in recent years the search has been on for newer and cleaner ways to produce the energy that we need to power our cities. In our accustomed reliance on fossil fuel sources for electricity we have overlooked the clean alternative energy that is all around us; from wind, to the force of a waterfall and most significantly the sun that basks our entire planet.

So where Solar Photovoltaic once seemed to be exclusively for space or very small applications, today the technology is being widely used as an effective and economically viable source for commercial and residential electricity. The necessary striving for clean alternative energy pushed to us to change the face of solar power and rely on it more than ever before. Along with this have come breakthrough applications and innovations which have given the capacity to mass produce solar modules and improve the efficiency of their power output while also making them cheaper.

In many parts of the world including the Australia, governments have set in place monetary rewards to strongly encourage their citizens to make the switch into solar energy electrical systems, as part of the agreed carbon reduction targets by the year 2020.

But you must remember that the technology and the government cannot solve the problem alone. What is required for it to succeed as well is your support & participation in making the switch to clean renewable solar power!

Despite the global economic downturn, the solar market in the United States grew by 36% in 2009. To date, the United States is the third largest photovoltaic market in the world (behind #1 Germany and #2 Spain).

The solar market is undergoing constant changes. Also the idea of photovoltaics has been around for over a century, only recently has it become mainstream. In 2009, changes include new companies entering the market, lower-cost panels, and changes in incentives and regulation. Solar companies need to be on top of these changes in order to remain competitive.

California leads the United States in solar installations. It has 53% stake of photovoltaic output. Most of the growth in 2009 came from utility and residential solar installations. Price cuts with minimal declines in incentives provided incentives to homeowners to install solar. In addition, new programs, such as the Pennsylvania Sunshine Solar Program, provided incentive for new companies to enter the solar playing field.

With so many states offering incentives to install solar, the United States is able to keep funding sources relatively disperse. This means that the United States solar market does not have the same risk as the national policies of Germany or Spain.

In addition, 16 states have enacted a Renewable Portfolio Standard. The Renewable Portfolio Standard gives the source of electricity production and requires a set amount of electricity production from renewable sources. Part of this standard is solar electricity production.

In the next 5 years, the solar market is projected to grow to 4.5-5.5 gigaWatts. One gigaWatt is enough electricity for 70,000 homes. This is 10 times the size of the current solar market. With market growth like this, it is extremely tempting to enter the lucrative (and growing) solar market.

From magnifying glasses to steam engines, scientists through the centuries have found innovative ways to harness the power of the sun. Converting more solar power into electricity is high on the political agenda in many countries, amid the push to find domestic energy sources that are less polluting than fossil fuels.

Distribution

Despite rapid growth in recent years, solar power accounts for less than 1 percent of United States electricity use. Solar power is more entrenched in European countries such as Spain and Germany, which have promoted its development with strong incentives called feed-in tariffs,which require electric utilities to buy solar power at a high, fixed price. In the United States, California is by far the leading solar state.

How it Works

There are several ways to use the sun’s power to generate electricity. One of the most promising is called concentrating solar power. This involves using mirrors to reflect and focus the sun’s rays, providing heat, which in turn helps power a generator. Another is photovoltaic panels, such as the displays on the rooftops of homes and office buildings (some of these displays, especially in California, have recently experienced problems with theft).

Drawbacks and Incentives

The drawback to solar power is that it is expensive to produce: generating power from photovoltaic panels costs more than four times as much as coal, and more than twice what wind power costs. In the United States, the federal government and states have offered a variety of incentives to encourage homeowners and businesses to put panels on their roofs, and for utilities to buy power from large displays. Solar panels produce no energy at night, but that is not a significant problem because the electricity is often most needed in the daytime, when consumers turn on lights and televisions and air-conditioning.

Solar energy is also used to heat water and pools — and of course a properly designed house will optimize the light and heat qualities of as it floods through the windows.

For now, electricity generation from the sun’s rays needs to be subsidized because it requires the purchase of new equipment and investment in evolving technologies. But costs are rapidly dropping. And regulators are still learning how to structure stimulus payments so that they yield a stable green industry that supports itself.

China Leading Solar Race

China has leapfrogged the West to emerge as the world’s largest manufacturer of solar panels. China’s efforts to dominate renewable energy technologies raise the prospect that the West may someday trade its dependence on oil from the Mideast for a reliance on solar panels, wind turbines and other gear manufactured in China.

The Chinese government charges a renewable energy fee to all electricity users. The fee revenue goes to companies that operate the electricity grid, to make up the cost difference between renewable energy and coal-fired power.

In the United States, power companies frequently face a choice between buying renewable energy equipment or continuing to operate fossil-fuel-fired power plants that have already been built and paid for. In China, power companies have to buy lots of new equipment anyway, and alternative energy is increasingly priced competitively.

But China’s commitment to renewable energy is expensive. Although costs are falling steeply through mass production, solar power is still at least twice as expensive as coal.

There is a great deal of information and enthusiasm today about the development and increased production of our global energy needs from alternative energy sources. Solar energy, wind power and moving water are all traditional sources of alternative energy that are making progress. The enthusiasm everyone shares for these developments has in many ways created a sense of complacency that our future energy demands will easily be met.

Alternative energy is an interesting concept when you think about it. In our global society, it simply means energy that is produced from sources other than our primary energy supply: fossil fuels. Coal, oil and natural gas are the three kinds of fossil fuels that we have mostly depended on for our energy needs, from home heating and electricity to fuel for our automobiles and mass transportation.

The problem is, fossil fuels are non-renewable. They are limited in supply and will one day be depleted. There is no escaping this conclusion. Fossil fuels formed from plants and animals that lived hundreds of millions of years ago and became buried way underneath the Earth's surface where their remains collectively transformed into the combustible materials we use for fuel.

In fact, the earliest known fossil fuel deposits are from the Cambrian Period about 500 million years ago, way before the dinosaurs emerged onto the scene. This is when most of the major groups of animals first appeared on Earth. The later fossil fuels -- which provide more substandard fuels like peat or lignite coal (soft coal) -- began forming as late as five million years ago in the Pliocene Period. At our rate of consumption, these fuels cannot occur fast enough to meet our current or future energy demands.

Despite the promise of alternative energy sources -- more appropriately called renewable energy, collectively they provide only about seven percent (7%) of the world's energy needs (Source: Energy Information Agency). This means that fossil fuels, along with nuclear energy -- a controversial, non-renewable energy source -- are supplying 93% of the world's energy resources.

Nuclear energy, which is primarily generated by splitting atoms, only provides six percent (6%) of the world's energy supplies. And it is not likely to be a major source of world energy consumption because of public pressure and the relative dangers associated with unleashing the power of the atom. Yet, governments such as the United States see its vast potential and are placing pressure on the further exploitation of nuclear energy.


The total world energy demand is for about 400 quadrillion British Thermal Units -- or BTUs -- each year (Source: US Department of Energy). That's 400,000,000,000,000,000 BTUs! A BTU is roughly equal to the energy and heat generated by a match. Oil, coal and natural gas supply nearly 88 % of the world's energy needs, or about 350 quadrillion BTUs. Of this amount, oil is king, providing about 41 percent of the world's total energy supplies, or about 164 quadrillion BTUs. Coal provides 24% of the world's energy, or 96 quadrillion BTUs, and natural gas provides the remaining 22%, or 88 quadrillion BTUs.

IIt's not so much that we mine fossil fuels for our consumption any more than it is to mine salt or tap water supplies way underground. The problems occur when we destroy ecosystems while mining it and while using it. Certainly, if there were a way that fossil fuels can be mined and used in ways that do not harm our ecology, then every thing will be okay... in a perfect world. What makes our world perfect is that, it really isn't perfect according to definition. It is natural, with all things interdependent on each other to live, grow and produce. Fossil fuel mining and oil production can and has caused irreparable damage to our environment.


The Fossil Fuel Dilemma

Fossil fuels exist, and they provide a valuable service. It's not so much that we use fossil fuels for energy that is problematic, but it's the side effects of using them that causes all of the problems. Burning fossil fuels creates carbon dioxide, the number one greenhouse gas contributing to global warming. Combustion of these fossil fuels is considered to be the largest contributing factor to the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. In the 20th century, the average temperature of Earth rose one degree Fahrenheit (1°F). This was a period that saw the most prolific population growth and industrial development (read use of energy) in Earth's history.

The impact of global warming on the environment is extensive and affects many areas. In the Arctic and Antarctica, warmer temperatures are causing the ice to melt which will increase sea level and change the composition of the surrounding sea water. Rising sea levels alone can impede processes ranging from settlement, agriculture and fishing both commercially and recreationally. Air pollution is also a direct result of the use of fossil fuels, resulting in smog and the degradation of human health and plant growth.

But there's also the great dangers posed to natural ecosystems that result from collecting fossil fuels, particularly coal and oil. Oil spills have devastated ecosystems and coal mining has stripped lands of their vitality. This is the primary reason there is enormous pressure on the current Bush Administration to discontinue its pursuit to tap the vast oil reserves in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR).

The oil, coal and natural gas companies know these are serious problems. But until our renewable energy sources become more viable as major energy providers, the only the alternative for our global population is for these companies to continue tapping into the fossil fuel reserves to meet our energy needs. And, you can pretty much count on these companies being there providing energy from renewable sources when the fossil fuels are depleted. Many oil companies, for example, are involved in the development of more reliable renewable energy technologies. For example, British Petroleum Company, today known as BP, has become one of the world's leading providers of solar energy through its BP Solar division, a business that they are planning on eclipsing their oil production business in the near future.

Future Supplies for Future Energy

Just how limited are our fossil fuel reserves? Some estimates say our fossil fuel reserves will be depleted within 50 years, while others say it will be 100-120 years. The fact is that neither one of these projections is very appealing for a global community that is so heavily dependent on fossil fuels to meet basic human needs. The bottom line: We are going to run out of fossil fuels for energy and we have no choice but to prepare for the new age of energy production since, most certainly, human demands for energy will not decrease.

Nobody really knows when the last drop of oil, lump of coal or cubic foot of natural gas will be collected from the Earth. All of it will depend on how well we mange our energy demands along with how well we can develop and use renewable energy sources.

And here is one very important factor: population growth. As the population grows upwards towards nine billion people over the next 50 years, the world's energy demands will increase proportionately. Not only will it be important for renewable energy to keep up with the increasing population growth, but it must outpace not only these demands but begin replacing fossil fuel energy production if we are to meet future energy needs.

By the year 2020, world energy consumption is projected to increase by 50%, or an additional 207 quadrillion BTUs. If the global consumption of renewable energy sources remains constant, the world's available fossil fuel reserves will be consumed in 104 years or early in the 22nd century.(Source: US Department of Energy) Clearly, renewable energy resources will play an increasingly vital role in the power generation mix over the next century.

Mardi gras will be celebrating With Solar Next Year

New Orleans has been hit hard over the last few years with one catastrophe after the other, I say their over due for a break, and maybe convert all the homes in that area from fossil fuels to solar energy would be just the thing.

New Orleans has been hit hard by Mother Nature and this countries recession and faltering economy. The oil spill in the gulf just about broke the camels back. So why not start there with making the biggest change that this country needs to make in order to become the super power it once was, to be the economic giant of old, what better way than to become oil free and solar dependent the way the universe planned for us.

Solar energy, solar power and all the changes to the environment, employment and the overall impact it would have on the region would benefit New Orleans in a very positive and beneficial way and for the country too. The people of New Orleans need a break and I think this would be a great one. It would be great is the U.S. government would subsidize the conversion of lets say 60% of the existing and new homes in the New Orleans area.

The Success Solar Group could help with matching the home owners up with the best contractors and suppliers of solar equipment to do the job. This in turn would create jobs, bolster the economy and bring much needed relief to the area. So if our leaders in Congress are reading this maybe they should start writing the house bills needed to put this type of legislation through and help get this part of the country working in the right direction again.

This would give the Mardi Gras committee a real issue to focus on and create next years celebration around which in turn would also create some temporary jobs, is anybody listening? Converting homes so that they use solar power to run the electricity, heat their homes, heat their water, and even heat the pools in their back yards would really start the ball rolling in getting this country off its Oil addiction.

Consider the environment in the New Orleans area already hit hard by the Gulf oil spill, this is an area much traveled by tourists from other countries and should be on the top of a priorities list of places to start improving the environmental conditions, and what better way than to begin with the way we get our energy supply, the fact that the area was so badly affected by the oil spill makes it a perfect model to bring in solar energy conversion.

You can bet a lot of people reading this might be saying why not let BP Oil subsidize the conversion from fossil fuel it's not as if they don't have the money solar power for all the homes affected by the spill. And rightfully so, why not? It would give them good PR.

This country needs to do something very soon, we think solar power conversions is a good place to begin, if enough people got behind this I am sure the Government would listen, remember our strongest voice is still our vote, something to think about. Photovoltaic Part Of The New Wave

Photovoltaics (PV) is a method of generating electrical power by converting solar radiation into direct current electricity using semiconductors that exhibit the photovoltaic effect. Photovoltaic power generation employs solar panels comprising a number of cells containing a photovoltaic material. Materials presently used for photovoltaics include monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, amorphous silicon, cadmium telluride, and copper indium selenide/sulfide. Due to the growing demand for renewable energy sources, the manufacture of solar cells and photovoltaic arrays has advanced considerably in recent years.

As of 2010, solar photovoltaics generates electricity in more than 100 countries and, while yet comprising a tiny fraction of the 4800 GW total global power-generating capacity from all sources, is the fastest growing power-generation technology in the world. Between 2004 and 2009, grid-connected PV capacity increased at an annual average rate of 60 percent, to some 21 GW. Such installations may be ground-mounted (and sometimes integrated with farming and grazing) or built into the roof or walls of a building, known as Building Integrated Photovoltaics or BIPV for short. Off-grid PV accounts for an additional 3–4 GW.

Driven by advances in technology and increases in manufacturing scale and sophistication, the cost of photovoltaics has declined steadily since the first solar cells were manufactured. Net metering and financial incentives, such as preferential feed-in tariffs for solar-generated electricity, have supported solar PV installations in many countries.

Solar homes, solar businesses, solar cars, solar factories, etc, this is the future, this is where our country needs to head, it widely known and well excepted that solar energy is clean, efficient and very cost effective. We just need to step up the implementation of making our every day life dependent on solar power and not fossil fuels, we have solar panels, electric cars, companies, factories but we still need to do more, we need to increase the number of these facilities and modes of travel, where this is the majority and not the minority.

What the smart ones are doing

Property owners are taking advantage of generous tax credits by adding energy efficient components to their homes and nearby structures. Some homeowners add solar arrays to their roofs, while others add them to their garages. It doesn't matter if the building is newly constructed homes or decades old because skilled installers can retrofit solar panels and arrays to accommodate any home with southern exposure. Here are a few examples of how the arrays might look on your home.

What about two story homes?

The Northern California Solar Energy Association, in its glossary, defines natural convection as "A method of heat transfer where a fluid (liquid, gas or molten metal) picks up heat from one object and carries it to another by currents that result from the rising of lighter, warm fluid and the sinking of heavier, cool fluid. The two objects exchanging energy don't have to physically touch. Convection is the source of the 'wind chill factor' and the 'cooling breeze' we experience outdoors and the 'draft' we feel often feel while indoors." In a two-story passive solar house with open spaces, warm air will rise to the top. The house can be designed to take advantage of this form of natural convection in order to cool the house using passive methods.

Frederick Bernard, the owner of Acorn Builders, a custom home designer, builder, and remodeler, says, "In a lot of these types of homes, you see what's called a heat chimney. It's like a cupola with vents in it. It can be made with operable windows so that you can open them at night and the heat will leave the house and draw in the cooler outdoor air. That's a passive way to cool a house."

The green-rated.org website, a project of Portland's Office of Sustainable Development, says, "When warm air rises and leaks out at the top of a building, cooler air is drawn in at the bottom. Openings and spaces, such as atriums, can be designed to encourage this type of flow. A heat chimney is a device that uses the sun to heat air to create convection. An example of such a device is a cupola on top of a house."

The Office of Sustainable Development cites the People's Food Co-op in Portland as an example of a building that successfully uses a heat chimney. The Co-op "installed a chimney stack to help cool their building using natural ventilation. The stack was installed as one component of an well-integrated heating and cooling system that eliminated the need for mechanical cooling." Though 90% of Americans agree that we should be employing solar energy to combat our climate and energy crises, the U.S. government has been slow to embrace and develop legislation that addresses those concerns. In a bill titled "10 Million Solar Roofs & 10 Million Gallons of Solar Hot Water Act" and introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on Feb. 4, 2010, Americans in all 50 states would be eligible for rebates for the installation of solar electric and solar thermal systems.

The bill known as the 10 Million Solar Roofs & 10 Million Gallons of Solar Hot Water Act adopted its name from California Solar Initiative's "Million Solar Roofs" program and is modeled after the incentive programs in California and New Jersey- number 1 and 2 in solar energy, respectively. It would provide for up to half the cost of any new photovoltaic or solar thermal system.

The 10 Million Solar Roofs & 10 Million Gallons of Solar Hot Water Act will produce 30,000 new megawatts of electricity in the next 10 years. This amount of energy is equivalent to the output of 30 nuclear power plants. However, it is extremely more cost-effective. The program is estimated to cost anywhere between $2-3 billion per year.

The average power plant produces about 1,000 megawatts for the $10 billion spent to build it. Sanders' 10 Million Solar Roofs & 10 Million Gallons of Solar Hot Water Act aims to produce 30x the energy of a nuclear power plant for only $30 billion. It would take $300 billion to produce that much energy from nuclear sources.

Distributed energy is much more efficient than energy produced from coal, oil, and nuclear. Yet, it hasn't benefited from the same amount of funding as the other more traditional methods.

Proponents of the 10 Million Solar Roofs & 10 Million Gallons of Solar Hot Water Act include Environment and Public Works Committee Chair Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), and Arlen Specter (D-PA).

According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, the United States should create 4% of electricity through photovoltaic solar panels and solar thermal technologies. Each year for the past 4 have marked significant growth of solar capacity. Currently, the United States generates 1.4 GW of electricity from solar (1 GW is enough to power 750,000 homes).

The amount of solar electricity production by 2020 heavily depends on the amount of solar financing available. According to Bloomberg, nearly $100 billion in private investment and solar financing will be required. This will increase the United States' solar energy production to 44 GW.

The growth is expected thanks to strong government support and decreasing cost of equipment. Currently, the federal government's solar policy is the industry's strongest ally. With the recent agreement to install solar on the White House and the current 30% tax break (off the cost of a solar installation), the federal government has shown that renewable energy is becoming a priority.

Over the next decade, the cost of solar energy and electricity produced from conventional sources will be the same without subsidies. To get there, the government must continue solar subsidies to keep money from the private sector flowing into solar.

With the growth of solar over the next decade, the United States is investing in our future through ensuring cheap, abundant energy. As conventional sources of energy are used up, cheap and abundant alternatives are required. With goals of competing in the United States solar market, Kyocera Solar announced that they will open up solar module manufacturing in their San Diego facility.

This move will bring them much closer to a Kyocera Solar milestone of generating 1000 kilowatts or 1 gigawatt of solar capacity per year by 2013. Reaching this mark would allow Kyocera Solar to supply 3.5 kW solar electric systems to about 285,000 homes. With an initial production goal of 30 megawatts per year, solar module manufacturing will begin in Kyocera's existing Balboa Avenue facility.

Kyocera Solar will take advantage of their current manufacturing operations to offer the U.S. solar market the company's most powerful and most efficient solar modules. Two reasons why Kyocera Solar chose San Diego are because it is close to Kyocera Mexicana in Tijuana and because San Diego's solar market has the most potential in the most ambitious state when it comes to renewable energy standards. San Diego has a rising demand for large-scale photovoltaic systems and Kyocera Solar wants to focus on meeting that demand. Overall, California has deployed more solar energy systems than any other state.

"Today's announcement is further proof that California's nation-leading green policies play a vital role in our state's economic success. Even in this recession, green jobs in California have grown, and Kyocera's decision to locate its solar manufacturing operations in San Diego will create even more jobs at a time when they are needed most," said Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Though the Kyoto, Japan based Kyocera has been involved in clean energy technology through solar modules for the past 35 years, they are widely known for their success in telecommunications, copiers, printers, industrial ceramics and more. In the year ending March 31, 2009, Kyocera netted sales of $11.5 billion.

What are the solar industry projections for the great solar boom in the climate-energy era? As the country begins climbing out of recession, it is going to require increasing public acceptance of solar energy to get the economic engine fired up.

Solar industry projections provide that the uneven supply and demand ratio characteristic of 2009 will be balanced out this year due to strong demand in the Asian and U.S. markets. These markets will help increase the global solar usage to 9.3 GW in 2010. This would translate into a market value of U.S. $39 billion.

Decreasing prices in solar equipment and materials should open up new markets allowing for the industry to reach a United States $77 billion value with 26.4 GW of capacity in 2015.

A huge role in the growth of the solar market will be the demand for solar technology in China. Currently, China is the largest single manufacturer of solar products in the world but not a huge buyer of them. China will have to deploy solar technology as they have a significant impact on global warming and the energy crisis. According to most solar industry projections, China will be the largest solar market in the world in 2015.

Supply and demand will only be restored to its equilibrium once the market experiences some company failures and lowered utility rates.

Ted Sullivan, senior analyst at Lux Research and author of the new report "Solar's Shakeout: Europe Loses Leadership as China Rises", cites that solar installations will rise at an annual rate of 23% between 2010 and 2015. Yet, revenue will only grow annually by 14% due to falling solar equipment prices.


With the projection of 26.5 GW of solar deployed in the United States in 5 years (currently just over 1 GW), there is plenty of room for expansion in the solar industry. As energy prices rise in the future, demand for solar will increase dramatically, creating jobs increasing revenue of strong solar companies.

If you truly wish your source of energy to be independent, there are only a few choices: solar in the form of solar electric panels, hot water panels, and passive heating; wind generators for electric production and windmills for water pumping; and hydro electric generators.

A good rule of thumb is that once you eliminate the use of electricity for space heating, water heating, and cooking (electric stoves), most any house can be operated successfully from a solar, wind, or hydro system.

What is a Solar Panel?

Solar panels generate free power from the sun by converting sunlight to electricity with no moving parts, zero emissions, and no maintenance. The solar panel, the first component of a Solar Power System, is a collection of individual silicon cells that generate electricity from sunlight. The photons (light particles) produce an electrical current as they strike the surface of the thin silicon wafers. A single solar cell produces only about 1/2 (.5) of a volt. However, a typical 12 volt panel about 25 inches by 54 inches will contain 36 cells wired in series to produce about 17 volts peak output. If the solar panel can be configured for 24 volt output, there will be 72 cells so the two 12 volt groups of 36 each can be wired in series, usually with a jumper, allowing the solar panel to output 24 volts. When under load (charging batteries for example), this voltage drops to 12 to 14 volts (for a 12 volt configuration) resulting in 75 to 100 watts for a panel of this size.


Multiple solar panels can be wired in parallel to increase current capacity (more power) and wired in series to increase voltage for 24, 48, or even higher voltage systems. The advantage of using a higher voltage output at the solar panels is that smaller wire sizes can be used to transfer the electric power from the solar panel array to the charge controller & batteries.

Basic Types of Solar Panels

Monocrystalline solar panels: The most efficient and expensive solar panels are made with Monocrystalline cells. These solar cells use very pure silicon and involve a complicated crystal growth process. Long silicon rods are produced which are cut into slices of .2 to .4 mm thick discs or wafers which are then processed into individual cells that are wired together in the solar panel.

Polycrystalline solar panels: Often called Multi-crystalline, solar panels made with Polycrystalline cells are a little less expensive & slightly less efficient than Monocrystalline cells because the cells are not grown in single crystals but in a large block of many crystals. This is what gives them that striking shattered glass appearance. Like Monocrystalline cells, they are also then sliced into wafers to produce the individual cells that make up the solar panel.

Amorphous solar panels: These are not really crystals, but a thin layer of silicon deposited on a base material such as metal or glass to create the solar panel. These Amorphous solar panels are much cheaper, but their energy efficiency is also much less so more square footage is required to produce the same amount of power as the Monocrystalline or Polycrystalline type of solar panel. Amorphous solar panels can even be made into long sheets of roofing material to cover large areas of a south facing roof surface.
